In Part 1… The North London Shamrocks was formed in 2005 by an amalgamation of St Theresa’s of Ponders End and Shannon Rovers/Sam Maguires of Wood Green. This ensured that North London continued to have a GAA football club.
The North London Shamrocks compete at a senior level in London and in 2014 won the Intermediate Championship in addition to the Murphy Cup, Shiels Cup and finished runners in the All Britain Championship.
We talk to the team behind this successful and ever expanding club and learn about their coaching strategy that brings on the under-age players into the senior teams.
With chats from Chairman Patrick Madigan, Vice Chair Mick Duffy and Public Relations Officer Peter Reid, we get an insight into how well the GAA is doing in the UK.
Peter Reid also highlights his facebook group, London Irish, which brings together the Irish community.
Peter Witherow and Michael Boyle also talk to us about coaching and the thriving Irish community behind the club.
In Part 2… Shane Corrigan was in his early twenties when he suddenly died following an epileptic seizure. He had been diagnosed with epilepsy when he first started at university and despite only having a small number of seizures, sadly passed away aged just twenty three.
Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is when a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and prematurely. People living with epilepsy are at a 1 in a 1000 risk of SUDEP per year but research still cannot explain why this happens.
His parents Margaret and Kevin talk to us about his life and how as a tribute to him, they are raising money to support Epilepsy Ireland and SUDEP Action.
They plan to cycle from London to Achill, where Shane is laid to rest, as a fundraiser to support the charities and to raise awareness of epilepsy.
To support their cause, visit gofundme.com cycle-for-shane-london-to-achill and help them make their £150,000 goal.
