Ep 417 – Irish Nurses in the NHS – an oral history & a new Podcast “There’s a lot I haven’t asked”

In Part 1, we’re at the Liverpool Irish centre to hear readings from a new book highlighting the lives and experiences of Irish nurses working in the NHS.

We hear accounts read by the book’s authors, Grainne McPolin and Louise Ryan that recall a mix of funny and harrowing times, as groups of young women travelled from Ireland in an era long before mobile phones, when all they had to rely on was themselves.

In Part 2, we’re at the launch of a new podcast, “There’s a lot I haven’t asked”. The podcast features first hand recordings of Irish immigrants, telling their stories of travelling to England and their experiences once there.

This valuable resource was created by Hannah Donelon, and she explains to us just how essential it is to ask questions of the older generation.
