Ep 462 – Selecting this year’s “Yorkshire Rose”

This week’s programme follows the search for Yorkshire’s representative in the famous Rose of Tralee. Filmed at the Leeds Irish Centre, we see a mix of cultural pride, personal stories, and light-hearted competition as young women of Irish heritage take part in interviews and performances.

Judges look for a contestant who best embodies personality, confidence, and a connection to Irish culture, rather than the traditional pageant-style competition.

The Rose of Tralee is a festival founded in 1959 in County Kerry, inspired by the 19th-century ballad about a woman named Mary, “the Rose of Tralee,”

The event celebrates Irish communities around the world with representatives from Irish diaspora regions coming together in Tralee for a week of festivities, interviews, and cultural exchange.

The Yorkshire selection show highlights how this long-standing tradition continues to thrive far beyond Ireland, bringing heritage and community spirit to cities like Leeds.

With Music from Tony Allen, Effie Neill, Barry Doyle and the Leeds Irish Choir.
